I have been searching for ancestors that were very certainly born before
1900 in Mexico. I have not been able to find a single one on either side of
my family. Is it because they were born in small towns and LDS has not
gotten to them yet (which means my hopes of finding records from a distance
is killed because of recent events), or ???

I have been reading these posts for a few weeks now and I would like to add my 2 cents. Alot of people depend on the LDS records, however I can tell you from first hand experience they are frequently wrong or incomplete. Alot of the info depends on who inputs it and how complete the records are to begin with. If you are able, try to do the research yourself...Its very tough to get some information and can be pretty frustrating, but public records from courts, clerks, and such are your best bet. The census records are also iffy as to how accurate they are.

Hi Cindy et al!

You are right about some of the data in LDS....I have found errors that were made by me way back when the computers (89) were first starting. I accidentally put one of my ggrandmother as Fannie Lee and all her records now show that as her name.....I have tried to correct it to Frances Harrison and to no avail. Other errors they picked up from my family tree was the name of George Douglas, instead of Jorge Douglas.......thanks!

I have to agree on the mistakes . I have been working with the Mormon folks here in Monterrey , Mexico for a few years now and one of the members ( the director of a stake ) asked me if I wanted to baptize my relatives ( the one's that passed away ) and even though I told him " absolutely not ! he went ahead and did it without my consent nor knowledge .

Now, here comes' the doozy , when I first came to Monterrey I just began jotting down whatever info I could find without sourcing it out and I made alot of mistakes and that's how he performed the baptisms with all my mistakes and I too tried to correct them but so far no luck .

Dear America:
Just because the online database doe not have your ancestors does not mean that the LDS does not have the records of your ancestors. Many, Many films are not in their database, but you can order the films and view them at your local family history center. Go to familysearch.org and click on the "Library" tab at the top of the website. Right underneath "Library", is "Family History Library Catalog". Click on this. Find the tabs down the right and click on "Place Search". On the next page put in the name of the town you are looking for, then Mexico in the box listed "Part of". When you find the town, click on the links to get a listing of all the films and years for that place. Instead of a Place Search, you can also do a Surname search to see if anyone has written a box about your surname. You might even do a keyword search. However, the LDS is working to put all their films online. Sometime in the future it may become a bit easier for us, but for now, I just order the films. Happy Hunting.
